Aligning your chakras: A great centering pranayama exercise

Many yogis (yours truly included) are guilty of denying their practices two things: sufficient centering at the beginning of practice and pranayama (yogic breathing exercises). This easy to incorporate exercise takes no longer than 5 minutes and not only will it get you centered, but it will also align those chakras like no other!

Here are the steps:

After a nice long “om” or round of chants, close your eyes and using visualization and intention direct 5 deep ujayi breaths to the following areas in this order:

  1. third eye or center of the brow
  2. throat chakra
  3. heart chakra
  4. abdomen

You can also include the solar plexus and root chakra if you have a good sense of where they are but the previous 4 should be sufficient. Once you are finished breathing into the abdomen open your eyes and focus your dristi on a point in front of you and continue the breathing while you move into your opening postures. Beleive me, this simple exercise will open up new doors for you and your practice 🙂
